A KVM switch allows you to operate more than one computer from one or more keyboard, Video and mouse. [ back to top ] How secure are they? Depending on the model you buy the User has the ability to have Password controlled access to their switch restricting unauthorised Users. If you are accessing the switch via IP then these often use 128 bit SSL encryption, and users must enter security codes which are hardware-based as opposed to software-based, making it even more difficult for any potential hacker. Devices also capture, digitise, and compress the video signal before transmitting to a remote PC, giving secure real-time control. [ back to top ] Will it work with my Operating System / Mac / SUN? The majority of switches are transparent to the Operating System, allowing them to be used in completely mixed environments. Multiplatform models allow any mix of PC, MAC or SUN. [ back to top ] How far away from the switch can the Computers and User(s) be? Depending on the model you have purchased the CPUs and Users can be anything up to 100ft away from the switch without the need for a KVM extender or IP device. However, with the use of an Extender the CPUs and Users can be up to 1000ft away over Copper, 10km over Fibre and anywhere in the world over IP. [ back to top ] What is OSD? OSD is an acronym for On Screen Display and is a function which allows you to switch servers using a 'pop-up' menu generated by the switch. Some switches allow the unique naming of servers for those who require it. [ back to top ] Do KVM switches support USB peripherals? We sell many models that support USB peripherals whether by direct access or via an additional converter. Please contact our Technical Sales Advisors for more information. [ back to top ] Will it cause problems if my servers are running different screen resolutions? No, but make sure that the switch you buy can handle the highest resolution that you need. [ back to top ] What Cables do I need? Some of the switches are bundled with cables to make life a bit easier. However, you may require different lengths or different connectors. Our cable section lists the relevant cables in length and connector by Manufacturer as they are more often than not proprietary to that company. If in doubt please call our Technical Sales Advisors for more information. [ back to top ] Do KVM Switches really vary in quality and performance? Yes. This is one industry where you definitely get what you pay for! When choosing your switch it’s very much a matter of “Horses for Courses”. Our suppliers provide you with a huge selection of devices to choose from for your specific applications from entry level SOHO (small office home office) products through to Enterprise / Data Centre Management Networks. Whichever is your level we guarantee the quality of the components used. The leading switch manufacturers use better quality processors for emulation and often can amplify the video signals. [ back to top ] How many computers can I attach to a KVM Switch? Depending on the model you buy anything up to 1024 servers in one network. Units can cascade or link their internal Bus system to create large banks of switches either co-located or distributed. We strongly advise that you contact our Technical Sales Advisors to discuss your current and future KVM requirements. [ back to top ] Can I link switches together? Units can cascade or link their internal Bus system to create small, medium or large banks of switches either co-located or distributed. We strongly advise that you contact our Technical Sales Advisors to discuss your current and future KVM requirements. [ back to top ] Can I use IP access devices with any make of KVM Switch? Generally yes. Our standalone IP access devices give you control of the Keyboard Video and Mouse connected directly from the device to the computer, or to the user input ports of a KVM switch. From this point the usual features of the switch should be available as long as there are not conflicting hotkey commands. If you are purchasing a unit to work with an existing KVM switch that is not supplied by one of the KVM Manufacturers that we support then please contact our Technical Sales Advisors for confirmation of compatibility. [ back to top ] How secure is Access Over IP? If you are accessing the switch via IP then these often use 128 bit SSL encryption, and users must enter security codes which are hardware-based as opposed to software-based, making it even more difficult for any potential hacker. Devices also capture, digitise, and compress the video signal before transmitting to a remote PC, giving secure real-time control. Some Manufacturers provide proprietary software and some use standard Network browsers to provide access. Whichever is the case they all provide hardware based security giving you the best possible protection from intrusion. If you would like to know more about a specific product then please contact our Technical Sales Advisors for information. [ back to top ] Is a software method as good as a KVM Switch? KVM technology gives you out-of-band control of servers as if you were directly connected. This means faster control without digital overhead, no drain on Server resources and Network bandwidth and full access to BIOS level with the ability to reboot. You also have increased security for the servers as there is no physical connection to this access level that can be hacked. Furthermore, on certain models Users access rights can also be restricted.
